Deer Hunter Widow Events

Next Saturday, November 17th, is the opening day for Deer Gun Season in Wisconsin.  For those not heading off to the woods, here are some fun indoors events.

November 16th 10AM-10PM and 17th 10AM-5PM The Twisted Pantry in Eau Claire will be hosting a Deer Hunters Widow Weekend with food and prizes. There will be a Wine Tasting Friday 4PM-7PM with hors d'oeuvres. Saturday there will be coffee and donuts for breakfast and Hunters Widow Chili for lunch.  Proceeds go to support the Pink Ribbon Riders. Visit Twisted Pantry Events for more info.

Saturday morning get a head start on Christmas shopping at the 16th Annual Northwoods Craft and Bake Sale, held from 9AM  to 4PM at Northwoods Elementary School in Eau Claire. Besides yummy baked goodies and homemade crafts there will be food and a silent auction.

Joe Knight Leader-Telegram: As expected, deer registrations were down opening weekend of the nine-day deer gun season.

New Map Shows Deer Population Estimates

MADISON – An online color map [PDF] that compares estimated deer populations to population goals offers a view into how population estimates are used to determine season structures.

The color-coded map of Wisconsin’s deer management units (DMUs) assigns a color to a deer management unit in one of four categories according to population estimates: more than 20 percent below population goals; within 20 percent plus or minus of population goals; 20 to 40 percent above goals; and more than 40 percent above goals.

Populations determine structure.

Eau Claire County Wisconsin Outdoor Report as of September 17, 2009

Wisconsin continued to experience some unseasonably warm and mild conditions in the last week, with no additional rainfall. Most of the state has now gone without measurable rainfall so far this September. Current fire danger has risen to moderate statewide, and a number of wildfires have been reported in the last week. Fall color is picking up with the Department of Tourism Fall Color Report (exit DNR) now listing about half a dozen northern counties at between 25 and 50 percent peak colors. Fall officially arrives next week with the autumnal equinox on Tuesday.

Water temperatures have remained in the upper 60s to low 70s on most Northwoods lakes and the pleasant weather has kept many anglers out on lakes and rivers, with fishing been generally good. Musky fishing continues to be a big draw and action has been generally good, with nearly all musky anglers seeing fish and having follows, and numerous catches of mid-size fish have been made. Artificials such as bucktails and top-water baits continue to the favorite lures. Walleye success continues to improve with some decent catches reported from on and around mid-depth structure and gravel bars.
